Scope

This document establishes the bioenergetic tier of the decomposed "Ozone = Life" thesis. It proves, within a bounded model, three things: (1) the proton-motive force (Δp) is the foundational, near-universal energy-coupling currency of cellular life (Mitchell chemiosmotic theory, Nobel 1978); (2) molecular oxygen is a thermodynamically powerful but not universal terminal electron acceptor; (3) ozone (O₃) has no role in any known cellular bioenergetic pathway. The net result: the bioenergetic tier offers no support for "Ozone = Life," and only narrow, oxygen-agnostic support for "proton gradients are foundational to life."

Worked Example (with numbers)

Nernst factor at T = 298.15 K: 2.303 × 8.314462618 × 298.15 / 96485.33212 = 0.059157 V = 59.16 mV/pH [Class A]. At physiological 310 K this rises to 61.51 mV/pH — always declare T.

Δp, respiring mitochondrion, Δψ = 160 mV (inside-negative), matrix alkaline by ΔpH = 0.75. With the matrix-alkaline convention the pH term adds:

Δp = 160 + (59.16 × 0.75) = 160 + 44.4 = ≈204 mV (within the reported physiological 180–220 mV range).

ΔG proxy, n = 3 protons/ATP at Δp = 0.20 V:

|ΔG| = 3 × 96485 × 0.20 = 57 891 J/mol ≈ 57.9 kJ/mol — approximately matching the ~50–60 kJ/mol cellular cost of ATP synthesis, consistent with observed ATP-synthase stoichiometry.

Dimensional Check

Δp: Δψ is in V (J/C). Second term: [J·mol⁻¹·K⁻¹ × K ÷ (C·mol⁻¹)] × [dimensionless] = J/C = V. Both terms volts → consistent.

ΔG: n [dimensionless] × F [C/mol] × Δp [V = J/C] = J/molconsistent.

Evidence Class Per Claim

  • Chemiosmotic theory / Δp is foundational coupling currency — B (near-A); Mitchell, Nobel 1978.
  • Δp equation and 59.16 mV/pH factor — A (derived; T-dependent).
  • O₂/H₂O couple E°′ ≈ +0.82 V (precise ~+0.815 V) is a thermodynamic-advantage fact, not a necessity claim — B.
  • Chemiosmosis runs identically on O₂/sulfate/nitrate/fumarate/CO₂/light (O₂-independent) — B (corrected from D per verdict).
  • Life predates atmospheric O₂/O₃ (earliest life ~3.5–3.8 Ga; GOE ~2.4 Ga) — B.
  • ΔG proxy with single n → fixed universal ATP yield — C (n is c-ring/transport-dependent; never quote a universal yield).

Falsification Conditions

  • "Life requires O₂" is contradicted-by-test (X): anaerobic respiration (sulfate, nitrate, Fe(III), CO₂, fumarate reducers) and fermentation sustain life with no O₂; life preceded atmospheric O₂ by ~1–1.4 Gyr.
  • The chemiosmotic claim would be falsified if a cell were shown to synthesize ATP via the F-ATPase without a transmembrane ion-motive gradient — not observed.
  • The "proton gradients are foundational" claim survives-as-narrowed-hypothesis: oxygen-agnostic, far narrower than "is life itself."

Outside This Model (fence)

This tier says nothing about: ozone being alive or making life (O₃ has no bioenergetic role — outside-model-scope); gravity vs. pressure; whether a simulation "proves" reality; unlimited energy (Δp is bounded ~0.2 V; ATP yield is finite and stoichiometrically constrained); or "protons are the soul" — a proton electrochemical gradient is a category-distinct physical concept, and equivocating it with any metaphysical "proton" is U/X. "Δp foundational" is supported-within-model; oxygen-dependence is contingent (U/X for the universal claim); ozone is outside-model-scope.
